Part of all my road trips is to follow parts of the old Route 66. Yes, you may have to get off the major roads or sometimes just take a business loop. If you have never done it and there are parts of the "66" near you, go take a jaunt.

Has anyone ever followed any portion of Route 66 and have stories to tell?

I haven't been on Route 66 but its on my to do list. Just like Detroit, Route 66 is a huge part of automotive history.

I would love to build a Factory Five MK4 or a Oldsmobile 442 and use that to drive in it.

The only story I can tell come from my very early days of life. I don't even know how old I was, but probably too young.

However I can remember myself next to my father's legs pulling of his pants to grab his attention, but he was too busy watching TV... it was the legendary Route 66 TV series in black and white!!!

I was still child when our local TV channel rerun Route 66 and my father explained me his fascination to drive some day the whole route.

Sadly he passed away a few years back and was never able to fulfill his dream :(

Even though, I know he did it some miles when he used to go hunting. This was his hobby :)

I am adding a link to this thread, especially for you Flexin, so you make sure to finish that list. There is a map and some photos that will show the route:

Car nuts love route 66 so I think it is a "must" for everyone who really wants to take a trip down auto memory lane.

As someone who loves cars and business, Route 66 makes me smile, but at the same time it is sad that it was dropped the way it was.

It seems it was a test road for almost 60 years. One thing that could have been done was to help business relocate to the highway. I like the big highway pull offs in Ontario and in some areas along the East coast . You can pull off, get food, snacks and fuel. The. Your right back on the highway. This could have saved businesses.

I need to find the time to hit as much if that Route as possible. One day I have to do it. It could be a cool story for Gearhead Central. :)

Just had a sweet thought. A Gearhead Central tour with a group doing the Route 66 trip. Now that would be nice. I think it us a little early for the site but I'm going to remember that. I would want it to be a half decent sized event.

Boy, Road 66 is somewhere I've always wanted to be. I got flamed up about it a couple of years ago and it never got out of my head ever since. I would like to visit every building on that road as well as the driving experience on it. I just find the history there more than interesting and I'd love to see it with my eyes rather than reading about it on the Internet. Definitely something on my list!

Maybe when I will visit America I will also take a drive on the famous Road 66. I never really liked the desert and straight road , but this is an automotive legend, and it must be seen at least once in a lifetime.

Flexin...........Now that would be a hoot. We could start it and members could join along the way. I could see a small start and again (like you said a sweet way) end up with a huge caravan as we got to either end.

I also agree it is sad of the demise...when you visit some parts you can see the businesses that held on and those that went bust. There are lots of old postcards that show the hay days of Route 66 and then when you see the same spots now it is great to see the old timers but you notice how many were replaced by 7-11s and such.

I have traveled Route 66 at least twice that I can recall. If you ever get a chance, its a real experience. Alas, its not like the old days, but there still is plenty of wide open spaces and Americana to enjoy.
