Lewis Katz was formerly the principal owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets and the NHL's New Jersey Devils. He was a shareholder of the Nets, the New York Yankees and the YES Network at the time of his death.
He had also just bought half-ownership of the Philly Inquirer newspaper shortly before dying in the crash of his private plane.
According to news reports, the crew did not perform the usual inspection checks on the Gulfstream before leaving the airport. Investigators are still determining exactly what happened, but what they think is that the instrument that allows a plane to take off the ground didn't work, but by then they were going too fast and were to close to the end of the runway to be able to stop in time. The plane had its brakes locked trying to stop, and may have caused a fire on board because some reports say the Gulfstream was on fire before it crashed into the river and the gulley below, completely incinerating the plane and killing everyone on board.
