Drifting is usually done on a track and not on the street. Therefore it IS a legitmate form of racing. If someone is doing it on public streets they should be prosecuted accordingly under the law. Drifting is NOT for the street.

That is a scary thought. I think if people want to do things like drifting and handbreak turns they should first get good at them on a track, where things can go wrong and they are the only people in danger.

In my humble opinion people who put themselves and the general public in danger by drifting on public streets need to have their driving prividleges revoked permanently. It is not a skill meant for public streets!

That is a really cool battle video. I have a lot of respect for the motorcyclist some of the things done by him in this video are crazy. How long do you think it would take to learn something like that. I would really like to learn how to do it. Has anybody ever seen the epic drift videos that ken block puts out? For me he is definitely the king of drifting.

Whoa! The car just drifted effortlessly, like it was quite easy to make a car drift that. I really wonder how they do it, it seems really hard and dangerous for the inexperienced.

I really think that most of us have certain hidden skills lurking withing us that are raging to get out. And when they make it out of the old shell they just make the owners shine.

That was some race. It seemed however the car was more suited for drifting than the bike. In some of the turns I noticed the bike did not really drift. It seemed the bike's traction in the curves was more positive than the car's which seemed to lose some traction on the curves thus making it drift more and therefore lose the race.

I shudder to think about that. It is hard enough keeping a car under control without setting yourself up for the really difficult skill of drifting I should think!

Why should "drifting" be taught to driver ed students? It certainly isn't a technique to be used on the open road in traffic I would think. Driver ed students have a hard enough time learning HOW to drive in a straight line much less learning to drift. o_O :nailbiting:

I say drifting is driving with style.

Rally racing is really popular in some parts of the world and drifting is a huge part of that. There's nothing like being on the edge while going WAY too fast on a winding gravel road. Oops, there goes the neighbors cow.

I don't know that I'd be able to drift on cue if I was asked too. The only time I drift is when I take the Mustang out in the snow.

*gasp* - you own a mustang and you've never peeled around in a parking lot somewhere? I'm shocked!

I understand wanting to take care of your baby but it's got ponies and they want to run too, ya know? :)

Add renting a sportscar to your bucket list and make it a point to do donuts and drifting around somewhere safe, it's the stuff dreams are made of for most 12-16 year old kids. It's not as much fun when you need a cane to walk around with so do it before you get too old.

Well, I guess that suggestion is only open for those keen enough to learn drifting. :D

I'd have to say drifting it is driving. It may not be safe driving but since it is driving done by professionals and it takes a lot of skill to do what they do, I'd have to say it is.

I would say so yes as drifting does take a lot of skill and practice to perfect. Driving alone takes skill and practice too but to drift is like learning how to drive again and chucking everything you knew out the window.

Drifting is something more than driving. It's a precision work. You cannot miss anything there and it is definitely more difficult than driving.

The definition of driving is the controlled operation and movement of a vehicle. When you drift, you're operating and moving the vehicle in a very controlled way. By definition, drifting is driving.

I agree with Rob. I must also say that a lot of drifters are great drivers. Great drivers don't really have to be great drifters too, though.
