Many automobiles are luxurious, some are stately, but only a select few can accurately be called grand. Among them are the Grand Marquis, the Grand Cherokee, the Grand Wagoneer, the Grand Voyager, the Grand Caravan, the Grand Safari, and the Grand LeMans. To that pantheon we must now add the Mercedes-Benz GLS, in particular the new Grand Edition.

Available as a six-cylinder GLS450 4Matic or a V-8 GLS550 4Matic, the Grand Edition brings additional finery inside and out. Outside, the models’ grandeur will be obvious with their special LED front lighting and their 10-spoke wheels—20-inchers on the GLS450 and 21s for the GLS550.

Inside, Mercedes-Benz’s Designo nappa leather in Porcelain and Espresso Brown adorns the interior, with seats that feature a diamond-stitch pattern and contrast piping. The dashboard also is swathed in leather and trimmed with open-pore ash wood with a striped design. Underfoot are velour floor mats. Mmm, velour . . .

What we don’t know yet is how much this all this magnificence will cost, but figure something north of the tariff for the standard models, currently $70,545 for the GLS450 and $95,945 for the GLS550. The special editions make their grand entrance at the Detroit auto show but won’t arrive in until midyear, giving dealers plenty of time to make their showrooms spiffy.
