I really the the BRZ but I thought would be nice to have a little bit more horsepower and torque. I hear that Subaru may produce an STI variant of the BRZ but I am also hearing rumours that the engine will be NA and it won't produce as much power. I can how that's a good business decision since it would prevent the WRX STI sales from being undermined but I hate it when manufacturers dumb down cars to keep them in a particular market segment. What's your take on this?

The reason it may be a naturally aspirated engine is apparently because they don't have enough room under the BRZ's hood to fit all the turbocharging required. I don't think Subaru would intentionally dumb down the car like that.

There are many reasons why they didn't go with a turbo. That car is a joint venture and it was a step away from what is normally done at Subaru. It has no turbo and has no AWD. The goal of making a more affordable "true sports car" kinda forced them to eliminate them. From what I read early on, Subaru wanted to show that they could build something different.

I guess that makes sense, it just feels like they are doing what Porsche did with the Cayman. The Cayman has a nice chasis but would be amazing if they had bumped up the power in the earlier models but I'm glad they increased the hp in more recent models. As much as I like the BRZ, I think that I would be itching to modify it even with the potential STI due to the lack of performance.

unless they can somehow squeeze a flat-6 in there, they'll be very limited on the upper end of power in that car with no turbo. People are willing to pay for more power usually. That said, the Scion FR-S turbo just got canceled, so maybe there is something about putting a turbo in here that is too difficult/costly.

I think you may be right, but I'm surprised that they wouldn't have made the engine bay large enough to accommodate a turbo charger or large engine. It's as if they wanted the BRZ to remain an underpowered NA.

They could also be taking the Mazda Miata route where raw acceleration is entirely secondary to handling and nimbleness. The BR-Z and FR-S are both a delight to drive (I've driven both), but they are not muscle machines... and that's ok.

Thats what I read about the car as well.

Here is what Jay Leno has to say about it.

The last time I had one of these I was going for a cruise around the mountains of mid-state New York on a beautiful fall day while all the leaves were changing. The FR-S was both relaxing and fun at the same time. Totally at ease on the road, I could push the car without white-knuckle moments. I drove a Camaro ZL-1 the same day and I can honestly say I'd prefer the FR-S as a daily driver.

I remember taking a quick look at them on the lot one day while I was doing a delivery. I thought the interior was really interesting and thought the exterior was a bit to plan. My brother in law was the opposite. His ex was going to buy one but moved out west and didn't think it would be a good car for the area.

I want to take a BRZ out for a drive at some point, they look like good fun when driving on windy roads. I see what you mean about going the Miata route; I guess these Toyobaru's as destined to be modified then.
