What Happened: Cadillac Presidential Limo Spied Testing, Almost White House Ready

President Donald Trump still rides in the same 2009 Cadillac limousine as did Barack Obama—on the same seat, in a vehicle built by the old General Motors that was 61 percent owned by the U.S. Treasury. A new model was known to be in the works, and speculation said it might appear in time for the inauguration, but it didn’t. Now a third round of spy photos proves the next-gen presidential limo is nearly complete.

Seen testing on public roads in Milford, Michigan, the new Beast, as it is known colloquially, trades the current limo’s dated cubist style for actual curves. Underneath is still a GMC TopKick heavy-duty chassis carrying enough trade secrets that revealing them would demote a tattling GM engineer to cleaning Mary Barra’s private bathroom. Through the heavy camouflage, we can see that the exterior design—a collusion of current Cadillac Escalade SUV and CT6 sedan elements—looks a lot tidier now than it did when we first saw the new Beast in August 2016. The rear quarters, especially, look much neater, and they more comfortably match Cadillac’s modern, restrained approach to styling.

Since presidential limos tend to span multiple administrations and suck up more taxpayer money to develop and service than they do fuel, Trump will not be sticking his own badge and gold-plated furniture inside as he did with his own special-edition 1988 Cadillac limo. Delivery of the new presidential Cadillac now looks to be imminent, but like everything else surrounding the armored seven-seater, the actual in-service date is classified.
