Former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison died in an Omaha, Neb., hospital late Sunday night. He was 44.
Morrison's longtime promoter, Tony Holden, said Morrison died at 11:50 p.m. with his wife, Trisha, beside him.

Morrison tested positive for HIV in 1996 before a fight with Arthur Weathers, effectively ending his boxing career. In the years that followed, he denied having HIV and also challenged the existence of the virus.

Trisha Morrison, who married Morrison in 2011, picked up that fight, and in a recent interview with ESPN.com insisted that Morrison had Guillain-Barre Syndrome, not HIV.

RIP Tommy. 44 is way too young to go.

I remember his fight with Big George Foreman where he won. He was a good heavyweight with great punching power. He was regarded as the Great White Hope. I also remember watching him as the villain in Rocky V.

He was pretty good. I wasn't a huge fan. I was kinda excited when he said he didn't have HIV and wanted to fight again.

How can the Nevada State and Athletic Commission (NSAC) get the results wrong? The NSAC typically ruined Tommy's career. He did not have the HIV after all.

Sad news. I enjoyed watching him in the ring. His knockout on Foreman was his defining moment without a doubt. I agree with p0gy0, that his career was ruined with the HIV tests. You cannot get stuff like that wrong. His career just got derailed after that.

I can't remember but u wonder if they did a second test after he failed the first. Once you announce that then you won't have many lining up to fight you even if they said they got it wrong.

Damn. He looked like a mess in the last few years of his life. He had lost hair, he had done some horrible plastic surgery, and he just looked way older than he actually was. He was a tough SOB in his prime, though.

That does not look like a man who was in his early 40s.
