Growing up my dad bought one of those "Cobra" over cab conversion vans. Pretty typical for the day. Then he got frisky and bought an old Greyhound bus. I think they called it a "flexibus". The inside was completely gutted and bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and large sitting areas were put in. Athough my mom and dad had 5 children to tote, we could often take a dozen neighborhood kids for a ride. It always seemed a bit much, but my young friends loved it.

Do you have a family or friend story about a home made (wooden campers, odd conversions) recreational vehicle story?

I just saw a British RV that was dubbed the profanity mobile. A converted old style ambulance emblazoned with profanity. I still think you guys out there have ridden in one or maybe know someone with one.

When my kids were small, we had one of the older VW camper vans, and it had definitely been a hippy van, with the flowers painted on the sides, and peace signs and such on the walls inside as well.
It didn't run great, but it putted along, and I only drove it right around town anyway. It did nth wave the sink or stove, but it did still have a small cooler type refrigerator. It only worked as a cooler and you had to add ice to use it. Since we weren't camping with it, that part was no big deal, in any case.
It would fit most of the neighborhood kids if they all squished up together, so we would get a group of them on Wednesdays for the youth night at church, and away we would go across town with the kids all happily crowded in the back.
It didn't go very fast, and the kids made fun of it, as well as my driving. They would say to my daughter, that I was "slower than Shari's grandmother.......and she's DEAD ! ", which always made everyone laugh.

I was recently in an 80's throwback Winnebago. The couple that were traveling in it got sidelined during that big polar vortex incident and had to pull off the highway. They couldn't get the thing started back up, probably because of the cold. I had come out with a church group to bring them to a warming center so they could get a meal and when I stepped into the Winnebago, it was like walking into a time warp. The decor was in pristine 80's condition. I bet they wish the engine had been too.

I'm still waiting on the opportunity to have my RV experience. Unfortunately, the rides we made when we were kids couldn't carry passengers. You either had to hold it ahead of you and steer it or there was another that could only take the driver. In order to get it going someone would have to push you in the back real hard, and choosing to go down hill also made the ride more enjoyable.
