Would you restore a junk yard car if you could?

With the budget you are on right now, is there a car out there that you would be willing to tow home from the junk yard and completely restore to its former glory? I don't mean Ferrari or anything like that. I am still a fan of the 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix (which was the first car I owned). It would probably cost me more to restore one of these than the car was ever worth. But if my budget allowed, I would go for it.

Yes. There are many. A Jeep is one. I'm thinking of putting some money together for a used Jeep (a year or two before it hits the yard) and do a build up on it. It could be fun (but costly) and would be a great thread for the site.

Others would be Oldsmobile Cutlass (70-80), Monte Carlo, early 60's Impala, old Peterbilt and I'm sure there is a few more.

If things work out, my next house will have a larger garage. I want a two car attached for the daily drivers and a three car detached toy box. I would like to have a hoist in one bay. I would love to have a project car or three. One I want to built is a Factory Five Roadster. I always loved the 427.

I like the Cutlass and the Monte Carlo, closer to the 80s body style, though. I see impalas driving around here now. I think just about all Impalas have some appeal to me. I definitely hope things work out for you. The one thing I would like to do is have a crew and do things similar to what i used to see on the show "Pimp my Ride." I don't want to do the dumb stuff like having water fountains and fish tanks in my trunk, but paint jobs, engine work, and interior customization sounds like it would be fun.

LOL. I would like to have that crew as well. I also agree on the waterfall. It was cool how he did it but I would have liked to see it on someones table or dresser rather then in the car.

I would want to get in there and do some work. It would be great to build some cars with some experts and learn from them along the way. Then apply that to my own dream car.

Yes, I would restore a junk yard car. If it was an ancient model that I like and it was within my budget I would go for it. I always like to see antique motor vehicles restored to their former glory so owning one would be a dream come true.

Depends if the cost of restoring it is reasonable. If not, then I probably wouldn't bother, especially if the engine is very faulty already. But if only the exterior needs replacing, then I just might restore it.

Probably not as I wouldn't have the time to restore it. Restoring an old junk yard car could be a good hobby for one of my two grandfathers though as they both love old cars and have a lot of technical know how when it comes to cars.

I can see why people would want to do something like this if there is a special car that you love, and it means a lot to have one and restore it. I don't think that I would be apt to do something like this, simply because a car is mostly just transportation to me, and so it doesn't matter a lot what vehicle it is, as long as it does the job that i need it to do.
However, if I were to do something like this, I think it would be a camper van. I have had an older VW Westfalia, and I just loved that little camper. It was good on gas, easy to drive, and I had a lot of fun traveling and camping with it.
If I did get one; it would hopefully not be already in the junk yard, it would be running, and just need more of cosmetic overhaul to make things inside the camper work right.

I do this already. These days it is a lot easier to complete a restoration because there are so many resources at your fingertips. Practically any make of car has a dedicated forum for it not to mention Facebook groups. Knowledge it always on hand and there isnt much that hasnt been done by someone else already. The great thing about restoring classic cars nowadays is the amount of reproduction parts that are available. For example a 69 Camaro can practically be built from scratch using only repro parts. It would be expensive but it is certainly do-able. If repro doesn't appeal to you and you want to keep the project genuine then eBay and Craigs List are great sources for parts.

Restoring an old car is not something you would do to save money, you do it because you are passionate about the car and want to take on a project. That's the way I see it anyway :D
