Do you have a radar/laser detector installed?

I am curious if others are running a radar/laser detector (colloquially known as a "fuzz buster") in their ride. I used to, but not any more.

    Anyway, just wondering.

Nope. You can't use them here. I remember a friend having one 22 years ago. A few people I know had them. They were banned somewhere around that time. I remember reading reviews on them and wanted to get a good one. I didn't end up buying one. When I was ready they were against the law or about to be so it wasn't worth it. And when I heard stories on cops possibly having a way to know that you had one I wasn't going to try to hid it.

Used to, but then it went off so infrequently that it really wasn't necessary; there really aren't any speed traps around here. I also figured out — get this! — that if you don't break the law, you don't have to worry about where the cops are. Imagine that. I don't see how that concept escapes people.

I could not agree more. I also had a "fuzz buster" in my car and like you stated it nearly drove me crazy going off all the time. I decided to just not speed and I didn't need a "fuzz buster".

I never had one...when I was speeding I just decided that it was my own damn fault if I got caught! In fact the last speeding ticket I got was when a plane spotted me and called it in. Hello Highway Patrol!

I have heard that if you put pebbles in your hubcaps it is supposed to mix up the cops radar....anybody ever try this?

There was actually one time I wished I had one going — there's an uphill climb at 40 MPH out here, and then it drops to 30 just over the crest of the hill. One time — one! — they put a cop in the crossover on the backside of that hill. Perfect place for a trap, really; if you'd never taken that road before, you couldn't even see and wouldn't know the speed limit changed there. Either they'd been having problems there or they were out filling their quota, since I'd never seen a cop there before, and I've never seen one since. Luckily for me I got off with a warning, since I happened to be on the job and it was time-sensitive.

I wasn't aware they are verboten in Canada. Interesting.

As to the pebbles in the hubcaps, I've never heard of that, but have heard of the practice of putting balled up tinfoil in said. As far as I know, that hasn't worked for decades, if it ever did. If did work, its conceivable you could get into legal hot water. Radar detection is legal in most states, but jamming is very illegal in them all. I don't know if the tinfoil thing could be considered jamming, but I sure as heck wouldn't try it.

I never heard of that. I don't have a car with hubcaps and I think the noise would drive me crazy. I doubt that would work. They did a thing on Mythbusters on radar guns and to beat it they had to use a jet car I think. It was out of the frame by the time the camera took the picture (That was for the photo radar that snaps a pic and mails you the ticket) . Do that enough and they will set up extra cameras and get you another time.

Damned technology! I know for a while when the radar guns first came out many cops were worried about becoming infertile! Unfortunately the ones who bagged me were not concerned!

My uncle has one in his car. We would go over a 100 mph on a freeway and the device would start making weird noises, and then we would slow down. I'm thinking about buying one of those radar detectors.

LOL...I wonder if they would need a search warrant to inspect your hubcaps! I imagine the best solution is just not to speed!

I wouldn't mind having one installed, but I hardly ever drive past the recommended speed limit so I don't see the need of having one, plus the mere fact that it is illegal to have one of them installed in your car, just makes me not to be interested in one.

That's not right, why don't they just make the speed limit to be a constant 30 MPH then? I mean, once you see a 40 MPH speed limit, automatically you expect that to last for at least 5-10 miles or so before it changes not a few meters. So say you are driving at 39 MPH then all of a sudden you are required to drive below 30 MPH is just a little bit too confusing, and to make matters worse, they place a cop at that exact spot.

I remember when they started worrying about that.l Then I started seeing some mounted in the windows of the squad cars.

We just can't win! But I appreciate people who speed more than those who slow way down to apply make-up or other things.
