Hey there everybody. What in your opinion and self experience is safer? A highway, or a country road? I think both have their pros and cons. Highways are considered to be the safer roads in the world since they have phycial separation of sides, at least two lanes in the same way and no leveled interceptions or crossings. Anyways, the speed there is alot bigger.

For the country roads, you have a bigger risk that somebody will do a dangerous over-taking, driving in the wrong way, but also the speed is lower and you're more entertained, meaning you have less chances of falling as sleep.

I'm a fan of highways myself, what about you?

Depends. There are some two lane (one in each direction) that are still around that cost many people their life's. So I would say that those highways are much more dangerous.

Well, it isn't considered as a highway unless it has two lanes in each way(total 4 lanes), here at France & Portugal.

They are here. Its a old highway that hasn't been twinned yet.

I prefer highway driving. I had a recent experience on a two lane country road (one lane either direction) where some lady in an SUV on her phone drifted across the double yellow line and into my lane. I did a hard right into the gravel and ended up sliding sideways but managed to control it enough to not spin into the other lane. The guy behind me wasn't as lucky and ended up in the ditch after he swerved to avoid it too. The lady just continued to drive off since she didn't hit anyone.

One danger on highways though are truck tire fragments. I always see them on the side of the road. I'd hate to be in the lane next to a truck when one of those flies off.

I say that all roads are safe, it's just the drivers. I've seen accidents on all kinds of roads and it wasn't the road's fault, it was the driver's fault. Speeding, recklessness, drinking and driving, etc. It's all the work of the people operating the vehicles.

I would have to choose the country road as being the safer of the two. With the country roads being smaller and in some area rugged, drivers tend to be more cautious. Also in some areas there are less road signs to pay attention to. The highways, I consider to be less safe because drivers are less careful, swerving from one lane to another and speeding. There is also a lot of debris on the roads which a lot of times does cause accident. Over all, good driving can make all roads safe.

I think it depends about the other "nuts behind the wheel". I love a drive in the country but you are right, people speed, tailgate and do scare the doodle out of me. A special nut award goes to those who pass on winding country roads. Freeways between the speed and congestion create their own hazards. All in all, guess I would go for the scenery and a country road.

Correct! The problem is that there are too many reckless drivers out on the road.

I agree, any road can be dangerous when we drive like a nut. When we drive slowly and cautiously, even the death road can be as safe as any other road. It's irresponsible drivers that are the cause of accidents, rarely the road.

My personal opinion is country roads. They may be narrower but there is just less traffic on them. You can concentrate more on your own driving rather than owrrying about what some other idiot is doing. The roads are narrower and generally lesser quality than Interstates, but it's safer.

I agree that the type of road doesn't really have bearing as long as the driver is careful and observant behind the wheel. If the driver is reckless or drunk, then for sure any road he drives in there is an accident waiting to happen.
