    Hi everyone,

I would like to know if there is any way to reduce the amount of times your engine light comes on. My car is fairly new and I've only had one accident with it. Since the accident, I've been taking good care of it. However, the engine light keeps coming on and it scares me because you never know what it is until you take it to the shop to get it checked. Is there something that I could be doing wrong to make it come on so much? I don't know much about cars. So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It will come on when the engine/computer is throwing up codes. That happens when there is a problem. You need to find out what the code it to see what is wrong. You have to go to the shop to get it checked out or buy a code reader. Or if you have a friend that has one then that will work as well. But you need to find out what code that is coming up so you can find out what is wrong with it.

You can find them at auto parts stores and some department stores.

The big thing is to look at the options each offer and see what you might want. For example, some will not check air bag codes. The one I bought doesn't. I wasn't thinking about that when I bought it. Then one day I needed that feature. They can be around $50 and go way up from there. I think I paid about $99 for mine.

What car do you have? You need to figure out what system you car uses. Newer cars use OBD2.

If you do have OBD2 and have a new phone. You might be able to use the phone app Torque. @J3NN4 uses the app. You would have to by a wifi or bluetooth OBD2 adapter but then you can use the app to read the info from the adapter. This might be your cheapest option. Plus there are some other nice features. Not bad for a $5 app.

The engine light comes on in my car when its below zero out. After the car warms up the engine light goes out. It drives me crazy, but my car is 9 years old now. So I just chalk it up to its old age.

Your welcome. Are you still under 60000 miles? If so your cheapest option would be to take it to the dealer for warranty work.

BTW here is that app I was talking about https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque

Is it 60,000 miles? Last time I had my car checked, I think they told me 30,000 miles.
