Don't text on your cell phone. It irks me to no end when I see someone who is swerving and I go by them only to see them on their phone. Other than that I would only have to say stop riding other drivers from behind. These are both just common sense and ways to prevent accidents.

It's crazy indeed, but when I see someone driving really badly I tell to myself, he's on the phone and when I look guess what, they are! People should really stop doing it...

This is a great idea not turning to look at someone you are talking to while driving. I IS as bad as talking on the phone or texting. Sometimes I think JUST talking to someone could be as distracting. It really irks me when I see someone talking on the phone, or looking down, and you know they are texting. It just makes me want to whip out my cell phone and turn them in!:arghh::arghh::arghh:

If I were one for putting bumper stickers on my car, I would have one that says
    "Hang Up And Drive"
I drove School Bus for 34 years, so have seen some pretty strange stuff out on the road.
One time a couple years before I retired, I was in Couerd A' lene Idaho on the afternoon route. It was a really busy time of the day for traffic. I had a schedule I was suppose to keep and tried doing it as safe as possible. I was in a turning lane to go south on HWY 95, there was a white suv ahead of me that just sat there. I finally moved up closer to him thinking if he saw the bus behind him moving that he would realize the light had changed and he could go. It didn't bother him in the least. I finally tooted my horn a couple times, after 3 light cycles he finally moved. I decided to try and see who was in the car so I followed him, but stayed in the right lane so I could pass and get a look. It was an older man and woman. I had gotten their license plate, and it was from CA. Anyway I finally got going to finish my route.
When I got back to the bus barn, my boss called me in the office, said she had gotten a call from a guy that was really irrate and that he was out to get me fired! He told her that I was over on Kathleen and Ramsey not 95 and that it was a 35 mph speed limit there, and besides being rude and honking at him, I was speeding. (95 is 45MPH) He said he had started having heart pains and the reason he was at the light so long was he was getting his medicine. Also he was a retired cop from CA. ( I think he thought he was still on duty and in CA and could throw his weight around.) I wrote him an appology letter, for being rude. It passified him and he backed off from my job. It really irked me that I had to write a letter like that when I had done no wrong. Him being a retired cop he should have known that at the light he was stalled at, he should have gotten out of the car or had his wife get out and ask for help~ to call the EMTs.

Besides always wearing my seatbelt I turn on my headlights even in the day time~ no matter if I am just running to the grocery store, or getting out on the Freeway and going somewhere. Most cars now have the headlights that automaticly come on, I don't so turn them on. It helps me remember to turn them on because I got into the habit of it for so many years driving bus. It was a requirement there.

I have heard that using sun glasses at night for driving to keep the glare away works. Also wearing them when it is raining, you can look right past the rain drops. I think you have to have the good sun glasses for this, not just cheapies. I haven't tried it but had tried the yellow night driving glasses. I also had a sheild that was made for night driving when I rode my motorcycle. It was awesome it seemed to light up the area like day time. I could see all kinds of stuff I wouldn't normally be able to see.

You never know any more, if someone cuts you off or does something really stupid if they have a gun and would use it on you if you did something to retalliate. You are better off just to get away from them, weither it means slowing down and letting them get ahead of you, or going around them if you can safely and get away. Sometimes it would be best to just slow down, and stay behind them so you could watch if they were DUI or an impared driver. Get his license plate number and mile marker where you saw him~ pull over and call 911 turn him in before he kills someone.

I would buy it. A distraction is a distraction. You could be talking to someone on the phone, and they give you bad news, or someone getting hurt, or dyeing. This would put your brain elsewhere than driving. If you were drunk, you would be concentrating on driving not on what was going on at home or where ever the bad news was from.

My favorite safe tip is to maintain a safe distance to the car in front of you, based against your speed. The rule I use in this case is 20 ft for every 10 miles per hour, over 30 before that I use 2 car lengths). That means that going 60 mph, I would want to be about 80 feet back.

That's a simple and good tip really jd, if we keep a safe distance between us a the driver in front of us we avoid a lot of accidents because we have time to brake. I actually avoided crashing into someone recently because I had the safety distance.

I agree that it's a distraction, but we can be distracted switching the radio station, eating or smoking and none of this is forbidden right?

I drive a stick, so this applies more to manual transmission drivers, but it also applies to all cars. I think it is much safer to get a feel for how different speeds look like outside the window, or when to shift, as opposed to always having your head down at the tachometer or speedometer. This has saved me from almost crashing into some morons on more than a few occasions, and heads up driving in general is just a lot safer. All my other personal tips are already dispersed on this thread.

Those are good tips, but as long as we know how to drive and we use our common sense we will be fine. The problem is that there are quite a few people on the road that simply have poor driving skills.

I know right? I've heard a lot of people say that the process to get a driver's license is way too easy. While I disagree with that, I do think people just tend to slack off on their driving once they get a license since there's no more pressure or tests to pass. I think there should be some kind of refresher course that you don't just have to take because you get a traffic violation because there's a good amount of people on the road with terrible skills and awareness.

A few years ago I was driving with my cousin and she was in the left lane and I asked her what was she doing there to what she answered, I need to be in any of them right? Meaning, she was clueless she needed to drive on the right lane!

Some of my safe driving tips are wearing a seat belt at all time. Do not speed on a wet, oily and dirty road. Focus on the road and what you are doing when you are driving and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Do not text or talk on your phone while driving. Do not speed around a corner or bent. When travelling with a child, keep them in a safety seat and in the back passenger seat.

People need to stop drinking and driving so much, keep there eyes on the road and stop partying so much and get some sleep so they can keep there eyes on the road. Tracy Morgan the comedian was almost killed by a Walmart truck driver that fell alsleep behind the wheel.

I agree especially in places like a grocery store where drivers are constantly moving.

I agree with all but the one i was taught the most is to pay attention to your surroundings.
