So if you didn't know, these are becoming a thing;cars which can drive themselves. Google is already testing their own form of them I believe, but it's obviously in early testing at the moment. Do you think it'll ever catch on, or would you prefer keeping the driving to yourself?

All these new technology cars still have a negative side so I just hope we don't see any of it. I would much rather sticking to the old way.

What negative sides are you talking about? Obviously there's still a lot of testing to be done before it's put into mass production, but this could seriously cut down on the rate of car crashes deaths and related injuries.

I'm very curious about these, I saw that one video of the Google car driving the blind guy around the city so he can do his errands.
    Thought that was pretty cool.

As long as there is a manual backup, so you can still drive the car yourself. I think these are great

I think they're cool but i doubt they're going to be produced anytime soon. I also think there will be conflict between the smart cars and the manually driven ones. What if someone with a regular car is coming crashing into you and you have no control of the car?

Seeing that most "cutting edge" and more affordable technology like smart watches have not yet become a hit, then I guess the more expensive technology like smart cars won't be mainstream anytime soon, like I'm guessing they might be popular around 5 years from now if all goes well and it becomes a hit among the masses.

Would yougo on the freeway knowing that the other way comes a driverless car fixed by Jhonny in his shed? ? The only use i can see for selfdriving cars is for blind people to go along , that's it . You may argue that sometimes you need a car that drives itself , Well you have it , It's called a TAXI .

Autonomous cars are coming. Like it or not. I forget the story but there was one about a small car that will be in California soon.

I'm not big on it. My biggest issue is that the people that will benefit from it the most can't use it. Most will still require you have a license and be ready to take over the wheel if needed. So you also have to be watching and ready to drive. If I have to be sitting there paying attention then what is the point of letting the car drive? I want to put my feet up and post on Gearhead Central, play a game or take a nap. If I have to sit there and be ready to drive I might as well grab the wheel and drive.

The people that need them are the ones that are visually impaired and so on. Might be good for the elderly as well. For them they might still hold a license so they would be able to use it and let the car drive with the current rules. So they can see a benefit from that earl on.

For me I want to be in the drivers seat of my Jeep and be the one that is in control.

Here is story on some of the rules for California.

"If you've seen one of Google's 'chandelier' topped autonomous cars driving down the street, you may have assumed the technology is legal. But up until now, Google has been operating the cars in a gray area, as autonomous cars have not been explicitly addressed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)."

I think it's very telling how Google's automated cars have only been in one accident and it was a person driving it at the time.
Computers are already advanced enough that we can trust them for getting us safely to where we need to go, as long as there's a big override button in case the car malfunctions and I can take over, I'd love to have one.

They can speed things up when the cars are speaking to each other. They can also run stop lights much more efficiently. Computers can pick how long to hold a light because they know how many are waiting and how many are coming. Cars can also run in a "train" which would save fuel by allowing them to run closer together. It would cut down on commute times.

In big cities it could save people close to an hour a day but moving the traffic at a faster rate.

So there are many positives but I want to drive. Like I said before I want to be laid back lounging if I'm letting the computer drive for me.

Ahhh but think of it like this. You have to be ready to take the wheel, because what if your Google car is just driving around, and WHOA THIS OTHER CAR IS OUT OF CONTROL!

The second car crashes into you, because the Google car is just driving on its route, and the human behind the second car is at fault. If everyone had an autonomous car, then you'd be able to play your game

Ahh but, there's only a certain number of Google's cars out there, driving around. If we assume that one in every hundred cars will be in an accident, and Google only has 99 cars currently on the road, then it's not the same as regular cars, if you get me?

Google isn't the only one making one. I just wanted to point that out.

As far as the car goes. There are many cars hit by other cars everyday. And a lot of them get hit. I was rear ended and couldn't avoid it even though I was at the wheel and letting a computer drive.

They will have some features built into the cars. I hear some are using radar. Doesn't really mean that it will be able to avoid all of them. Just like regular cars.

The real reason that you have to is so that you can take over if the car fails.

I'm not very confident about letting the car drive instead of me driving. I mean the technology isn't very advance yet, I think there's going to be glitches to this technology. Anyway, where's the fun in owning a car when we let a third party to drive it?

Can't help but saying I hate the idea of being driven by a machine. Cars are already in a very automatic version now a days and I sometimes think it's too much, can't think of something even more automatic. I like to drive, if I wanted to be driven, I'd call a taxi, not buy a car.
