I was watching videos on youtube and came upon one that showed a replica lamborghini that looked exactly like the real thing and they were selling the replicas very cheap. My question is how do they make these replicas and why doesn't lamborghini sue them for this. Have you had any experience with replica cars?

It's not worth looking stupid or feeling stupid. They make them from making a mold of a real lambo body and putting it on top of a cheap car's chassis. I don't know why they don't get sued.

I had a friend who turned his junk car into a sleek looking GTR and needless to say it does look like a real GTR only with a crappy engine. I honestly don't know why major car companies don't sue these kind of things, I mean, they're basically ripping off the design and it's not like a subtle similarity, I mean the whole thing. But I think it's because they're not (the replicators) worth the effort to sue(?) I mean, if they're doing it and making billions then I think the companies will have to take some steps, but if they're just earning a couple thousand bucks well. I also think it has something to do with the inside of the cars (engines etc.), if they can replicate a Lamborghini from the windshields to the valves, then I guess some suing is about to happen.

I think so too. Maybe the people making the replicas are not a threat to the big car companies and its just not worth suing them. Also maybe the makers of the replicas are extremely private.

I am assuming they would have to have a production car that looks exactly like their cars and name a company and everything in order for them to sue i guess. I could be wrong.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. Replicating a cars looks solely on chasis is one thing but replicating the whole car even the engine is a whole new territory if you ask me. Maybe that's the reason why big car companies don't sue these replicators, another thing is, now that you've mentioned production, I think if these replicators mass produce these replicas then it would cause some problems.

They do sue. They just don't always win. Carroll Shelby had at least a couple of lawsuits. Over in China they are making a copies of more normal cars (not doing a good job of it in the looks department as far as I'm concerned) and it seems to be that if you don't use the name as well then you are fine.

It is a tough battle to win it seems. If they sue they have a chance of bankrupting a small company. If the courts allow it to go far enough. But as far as winning goes, They don't seem to have much luck with it.

I want to build a Factory Five Racing MK4. It is a dream of mine. I love the 427 Cobra. But when looking at different things and wanting something close to original, I found out that they were all different. It was really a custom beast. So there was some differences to them. So for me that made me feel better about not following the "original" to a T. I want the body style and look of the car. From there I would do things my way.

The cool thing about the Cobras is that you can, if you have the money, build the 427 side oiler. Or you could go with a 428 and 429 which I believe they had as well. Or you could save money and use the 351 Windsor and so on. You can make it like the Cobra.

With the Lambo kits, you are mostly using a Fiero or a MR2. I don't think these would give me the same feel as the real thing and not have even close to the same sound. Plus the interior will be way off. In the MK4 I will have a similar interior. I could go for original style or make changes to suit me.

Some manufactures like Factory Five Racing are also building their own super cars now. So you get a exotic body that isn't a copy of another car and you can build your own super car. I like this route.

I think that it's creative and I love that there people who know what they want and I'm not deterred even though their challenges and between them and their goal such as finances. I think these car manufacturers can't really sue these people because there is not much for them to benefit from. If you sue an individual who can't afford to buy a car because it's out of their budget range then I do not think that they will be able to pay a lot as a major company or corporation. So they just watch from a distance and let some of these things happen.

Well they wouldn't sue the buyer but they would sue the maker of the kit.

I see it a couple of ways. A buyer of a kit car normally isn't even close to being a potential customer of the original car because of cost.

But then I also look at it as being harmful to the original car maker because of possible poor build quality of a kit. Also a different engine would give a different sound and might turn off potential buyers if they don't know any better. But then I would feel that they would have been around real ones if they have the money to buy one so they would know the difference. And they might not travel in the same areas.
