Volkswagen released pricing today on the all-new, seventh-generation Golf, and there’s a lot to cover. There’s an expanded model lineup, the return of the three-door hatchback, a pair of limited-edition models, and some significant price reductions compared to the previous model year.

Under the hood, the 2015 Golf will be offered with two engines: a turbocharged and direct-injected, 170-hp 1.8 liter four with a five-speed manual transmission as standard or an optional six-speed automatic; or a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel that makes 150 horsepower and 236 lb-ft paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic. We’ll start by looking at the gas-powered versions:

    • Launch Edition ($18,185): A value leader, available in limited numbers and offered only as a three-door hatchback with a five-speed stick. The Launch Edition is equipped with power windows and door locks, air conditioning, Bluetooth, a touch-screen radio, iPod integration, satellite radio, and manual-operated cloth seats. It’s priced $2000 less than 2014’s lowest-priced offering, but that model was a five-door hatch.

    • S ($19,815): The only other three-door offering sneaks in at less than $20,000 with the manual transmission; an automatic adds $1100. The S adds aluminum wheels, VW-Tex faux-leather upholstery; an unfaux leather-covered steering wheel, shifter, and handbrake; cruise control, and VW Car-Net connectivity. A five-door hatch (automatic only) is priced at $21,515.

    • S with Sunroof ($21,815; from here on up, the offerings are five-door only): As you might expect from the name, the S with Sunroof adds a power-tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof. Other options at this level include a Lighting package ($995) with bi-xenon headlights and LED running lights, interior ambient lighting, and adaptive front lighting; a Driver Assistance package ($695) with forward collision warning and front and rear parking sensors; and a six-speed automatic transmission ($1100).

    • SE ($25,315): Available with the six-speed automatic standard, the SE takes all the standard features of the S and adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, a Cold Weather package (heated seats and washer nozzles), rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, fog lights, a rearview camera, and a Fender audio system.

    • SEL ($27,815): The top trim level takes the SE and adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, navigation, automatic air conditioning, keyless entry, push-button start, sport comfort seats, 12-way power driver’s seat, and ambient lighting with LED reading lights.

The TDI diesel offerings follow the basic package configurations and standard features of the gasoline versions. All TDI models are five-doors; the diesels will offer the six-speed manual transmission as standard, with the six-speed dual-clutch automatic optional at $1100.

The lowest-priced diesel is the TDI S. At $22,815, it’s priced at a meaningful $3205 less than last year’s base Golf TDI. The next step up is the TDI SE ($26,315) and is equipped like its gas-powered counterpart, adding to it the sunroof, the Cold Weather package, and Fender audio; likewise, the top-of-the-line SEL ($28,815) includes navigation, automatic air conditioning, keyless entry, and push-button start.

But we’re not done yet. A limited-edition Golf Sport, based on the gas-powered SE five-door with the six-speed automatic, will be offered. The Golf Sport will feature the Lighting package plus a special body kit that includes a front-lip spoiler, side skirts, a rear valance and large rear spoiler, and chrome exhaust tips. Colors will be limited to Pure White or Platinum Gray and only about 650 examples will be built, starting at $27,750.

The all-new seventh-generation Golf is expected to arrive in August; pricing for the all-new Golf GTI already has been announced, starting at $25,215. If history is any judge, we may have another pair of 10Besters on our hands here.
