This is quite different. Seems like a lot of work starting this truck. Is this using the concept of gasification?

I have no idea, bsge. This was the first time I ever heard of them. From what I read they were popular in Europe during the end of the WWII era.

This is from the article done in '81.

"With reliable economic analysts predicting fuel prices of over $2.50 per gallon within the next year or two, it'd be difficult to imagine anyone not willing to investigate alternatives now, in preparation for the future. (In fact — even at today's gasoline prices — fewer and fewer people can really afford to travel!) And, of the motor fuel options available today, wood gas is certainly one of the easiest and least expensive to produce and use.
LOL. If fuel went to $2.50 now people wouldn't turn off the engine.

These old trucks are great, I love what some people come up with and produce.

Unfortunately this type of truck would have been taxed heavily and/or their source of wood would have been limited not because they weren't efficient but because they would have been a threat to gas sales if they got popular.

I've never seen one of these in person.

I don't know if that would be the case. From what I was reading they were popular during the war when fuel was limited. That and it wouldn't be used by enough people to worry the fuel companies. In the city it would be hard to get wood fuel and the time it takes to get it started wouldn't make it popular in the city. I think it is great though. I like that it can use scraps. Wood from a construction site, tree branches from trimming on properties/power lines and so on. There was even talks about people using it for generators on farms.

There are many uses for this even today. This could be used at a cabin that is far out or you just want to keep it off the grid. You can use this to fuel a generator. With a good size generator you could run a lot of things in a cabin. It could be used on a house/cabin on an island. And if there is a tree arborist around you might be able to get free fuel dropped off to you. It would save them on dump fees.
