I always argue with my father that steering wheels do not need covers but he's very stubborn insisting on having steering covers. His reason was that steering wheels will wear if it's not protected by a cover. I on the other hand, find it more comfortable and have better control without one. What do you think of this, do you think my father has a valid point in this?

What? Why in gods name would anyone think that using a steering wheel cover is a required thing? That's quite odd in my opinion. No I prefer the plain old hand on the steering wheel itself. I can't even imagine having to drive a car with a slipperly cover on top of it.

A cover will make the steering wheel look better for the next owner but I would use one now. I had one on my first car. It was jus an accessory to make the car mine. It was a leather wrap so it is tight and had good grip so it wasn't that bad. I did t do it to protect the steering wheel from wear.

Some are big slip on covers with a print. I wouldn't use one of those myself. Everyone has their own preference.

I love steering wheel covers, they look so nice and come in so many different colours and designs :) I guess they could protect the steering wheel a little... it's be easier to clean the cover and you can just change it whenever you want. For me those covers are a must!

The other thing why I dislike using a cover is how dirty it gets after prolonged use. During the hot weather, my hands get all sweaty and stick to the cover which means I'll have to change it often. Yeah, holding a germ filled steering wheel isn't what I had in mind when I bought a car.

Yeah, it can get quite dirty, but you can change it once it gets way too dirty ;) Have you thought of wearing gloves when driving? There are some special gloves people wear here, they use them during the hot season to protect their hands from the sun.

I remember when I was young, most people had steering wheel covers and all of the older people said it kept wear and tear off your actual steering wheel. I, on the other hand, thought it was simply for fashion. The only time I've had one is when a purchased a much older used car and it just happened to be on it so I left it there but it is nothing I would personally buy.

I would have to toss one that someone else had.

What kind of glove? It needs to be something that would have decent grip. With a regular wheel you can easily clean it. I would rather do that then have a cover.

Now if it was a Gearhead Central cover I would have to agree that everyone should have one. Lol

Your father has a point. steering cover helps to protect the steering from wearing out. But in my opinion, it is a matter of choice. if you feel comfortable without it, then be it so.

I have tried wearing gloves but it made things worse. My hands are already sweaty because of the heat, wearing gloves amplified that and my hands smelled like dead fish whenever I removed them after driving.

Uhm, have you see a doctor for that? Getting sweaty hands is pretty normal to a lesser degree. But your sweaty hands issue sounds serious. I used to have a similar issue, I no longer have it... I'm guessing it's something related to hormones or maybe your sudoriferous glands.

They feel like bad throwbacks to the 80's and 90's. I remember when just about everyone had those leather or fluffy steering wheel covers, the beaded car seat covers, leather hood bras, window trim, splash guards and other crap all tacked on to their cars. I hate having all this extra crap in my car, it looks junky and cluttered and often times gets in the way or tangled with other stuff in the car. Plus the friction from some of these things can still do damage to your car. I had a bra on a few of my cars, and you could clearly see the marks it left behind when took it off to sell the car - it would have looked better to not have had it on there.

The leather bras did save the car from rock chips but you would end up with scratches from road grime under it. You can't win.

I haven't used one myself just because I've never really been able to find one that matched my interior or wasn't completely tacky looking. If I could find one that is really comfortable then maybe my mind would change but for now I don't really have any options.

Well we don't have steering wheel covers, but if I'm lucky to own my own car then I'd buy one to protect it from wear and tear.

It's nothing serious, I've asked a doctor before. He said it's a common thing for people with sensitive palms. I live in a hot country which amplifies my sweat glands, also because I get nervous easily which is why I sweat a lot.

I did put steering wheel cover on my first car because I couldn't afford to wrap it at the times. Ever since I have been putting covers on my steering wheels. I like to use covers that match with the interior of my car. I think it adds to the beauty and also becomes a protective for the steering wheel.
