In my auto lifetime I have driven both automatic and manual transmission vehicles. I
absolutely prefer manual transmission vehicles. I feel I have more control with a
manual tranny. As was stated previously if the battery is low simply throw it in second,
find a little slope, turn on the ignition, step on the clutch, let roll a little, release the
clutch and away you go. That's the only way to go!

Another issue brought up with my lack of manual transmission skills is that once, in Vegas, I had an opportunity for a free exotic car rental for two hours. All of them were manual. All of them. :(

Sorry for the late reply Barry ~ not rude, just didn't see your post. No that pick-up is long gone. My father had a history of driving vehicles off cliffs (drank a bit but never got hurt) and the last episode was the its final resting place . I was in the Service at the time and he decided that he wanted to drive it. I was not too happy about it, but what can you do? It was a great machine!

Learned to drive manual at age 13 on my father's van. You cannot enjoy auto after that. But frankly i'm with the group that gets annoyed by the clutch while driving in the city, so i drive an auto for my day to day errands.

I drive an automatic, because I don't yet know how to drive a manual, but I hope to learn one day. As a girl, I always wanted to drive a manual, I thought that it would make me one of the sexiest things alive if I knew how to hop into a car and shift and shift and shift:roflmao::thumbsup::inlove: . Uuughhh! I have always wanted to learn to drive a stick since as long as I can remember.

I've owned 3 cars so far and they all have been automatic. I always used to drive with 2 feet; gas with the right foot, break with the left, just pretending that I was driving a stick. I don't think one can understand how much these means to me. It is one of those things that has just gotten under my skin and has been there since...forever!!--the need to drive a stick.

I will tell you a secret. Don't laugh:mad: . Sometimes, even to this day, when I am sitting at a stop light, I will sometimes put my car in park, then, right when I know the light is about to turn green, I will make this semi-big ta-do about taking it out of park, so that it looks to the people behind me like I'm shifting, like I'm actually driving a stick. I love doing that.

Years ago, right after high school, I got a job at Wendy's. A co-worker of mine used to give me a ride home sometimes. She used to drive her boyfriend's car which was a 1983 300zx, something like that. It was a stick shift. We would ride along and she would drive and shift, and switch lanes and shift!! She looked like a boss the way that she would handle that car. I was soooo jealous!

One day, ONE DAY!!! I'm going to learn to drive a manual.

Whew! I feel like I need to lay down. Is it lay down or lie down? Which ever one it is, I feel like I need to do it. This manual vs automatic subject has taken a lot out of me:hilarious::hilarious:.

I've tried manual before, or as I like to call it stick-shift, which sounds cooler. It was pretty fun. It does take a lot of experience and getting used to but I wouldn't mind driving any car with a stick-shift.

Since a lot of people on the forum prefer a manual car, then I'm sure that they'll be encouraged all the more to buy one because of the price. It's way cheaper than an automatic. My cousin wanted to own a brand new Honda that's an auto, but since the price disparity was so big, she ended up purchasing tthe manual version of the same model.

I've got to go with manual for what driving is worth! When I was learning to drive, I was given the option of learning either automatic or manual with many around me encouraging that I go for automatic since they felt that cars with a manual transmission were getting "obsolete" which I completely disagreed with! I went with manual lessons because I just find that the art of driving lies in you mastering how you can control your car and not the other way around which is the case with the automatic transmission. Though automatic cars are a joy to drive especially in traffic jams, I just feel that it is the car controlling the way you drive rather than the other way around. The joy of driving is just taken away with the clutch!

I personally like manuals, and have always supported them because you need one to be able to drift a car, which is what I do. Friends don't let friends drive automatic!

Manual! Automatic makes me feel powerless, I have to have complete control of what I'm driving! It shocks me as well to see how many people can't drive manual

I usually think that people who learned to drive on an automatic doesn't really know how to drive. Whenever somebody asks me to teach them to drive, I always deny their request to use an automatic.

Automatic; I'm not afraid of pitchforks. :p

Mostly because I have kids, and I remember how horribly carsick I would get riding with anyone driving a manual transmission. With my first pregnancy, I had terrible morning sickness, and my husband was driving a manual at the time, and that was just horrible. Yes, I know part of it is skill, but I've been with at least 4 or 5 different people driving manual transmissions, and it is just too jerky.

The other part is that I never had anyone to teach me, other than once briefly with an ex-boyfriend.

This is another point.. Every time we troubleshoot cars, one step is to push the car fast and kick the gear in. This you can't do on automatics..

    Welcome to GearHead Central jackkant!

I had two people in my car when I was younger. The guy in the passenger seat made a comment on how well I drove a standard. The guy in the back sat up quick and said this is a standard?

The driver plays a big part in it. Plus some cars are just easier to drive. Some cars now have really light clutches which I hate and 4 cyl engines with no torque that take more effort to drive smooth.

No feel. Chella has one like that in her Santa Fe. A light clutch and a low torque make it less fun and harder to drive. I like some weight to the clutch myself. Her older one was a bit better.

You can start automatics by pushing them as well. It just takes more speed and you can't get that speed pushing it by hand. Most automatics required at least thirty-five miles per hour before they would start. You simply put them in low gear and the pushing vehicle takes the vehicles needing the jump to that speed and usually the pushed car will start unless there other electrical problems.
