I've read a lot about both supercharging and turbocharging and everything I've read seems to point to superchargers being quite inferior to turbochargers.

So I'm wondering, are there any benefits to supercharging over turbocharging? I know that superchargers are far more common in American cars than turbochargers; any particular reason for this?

I would think that the preference for supercharging has a lot to do with their linear output and the fact that they possess no lag. I personally prefer turbocharging however but in a bit to overcome lag I might end up employing a twin-charged setup.

Personally i prefer turbocharging as you are not sapping some of the engine power to run the supercharger they both have there advantages and disadvantages but overall i would prefer turbocharging to supercharging also i like how usually you can find space for a turbo in most cars engine bays but it is difficult to find somewhere to put a supercharger.

I prefer the turbocharger, too. However, they can generate pretty high temps, that aren't as much of an issue with superchargers. Still, I see people preferring a supercharger.

I believe they prefer a supercharger because it's cheaper than a turbocharging kit which includes a new cooling system. I to prefer turbocharging but it has to be twinturbo with variable timing so it has little to no lag.

Are any of these options the same as putting a chip in your automobile? I'm just curious as I don't know much about this stuff. I've had a few friends that put chips in their trucks for the extra horsepower. I imagine though to supercharge or turbocharge you are likely doing a lot more mods to the vehicle right?

I'm going to pretend I know what I'm talking about and say that I prefer superchargers. Why? Because the name sounds cool! Hope that helps . . . :p

The chip you are talking about is the remapping of the ECU (the modern car brain) which give you on the average 15-20% MORE POWER , supercharging it totally different thing.

Oh ok, thanks for clearing that up. So that would be a quick boost in power then, and is pretty effective? Are they available for a wide range of cars, or what?

I like turbo-charging since it requires less from the engine takes up less room and I just have a personal preference for it but they do get pretty hot. Each has its ups and downs.

I haven't watched all of this yet but this might be a good video for those that don't know what this is about.

They are avaiable for all cars with an ECU, so they have to have a modern engine not a carburated engine , no chip for that buddy.

Oh ok, that is kind of what I was thinking. The whole chip thing kind of signals that right. :)
Thanks for clearing it up for me though, was never that clear on that.

Having done some research on twin charging, I think this is the best way to go if your budget permits. All the pros of turbocharging with none of the cons.

@Style, If the truck is an '80s or older Ford/Chevy, forget the chip and just drop a huge blower in there. Nothing more badass than seeing an old Chevy with a gigantic blower. :p
