Most newer cars come with a navigation system that also doubles as a dvd player. Do you think it's necessary or just a gimmick to make it look like there are a lot of features? I doubt that many people actually have the time to watch movies in the car.

I've rode in cars that have tv's, and I think it's only useful if the passenger in really gonna pay attention to it while in transit, because it's really hard to watch tv or read anything while inside a car, right?

Yeah, it's pretty disorienting to watch anything while in a moving vehicle. I think most don't allow movies to be played while the car is moving because of safety reasons other than those luxury ones that have multiple displays. I'll probably get motion sickness by watching a movie in the car though.

There are SUV/MUVs with that feature over here in India. In fact, our homegrown Tata had introduced a DVD player with the front touch screen. However, when the ignition is turned on, the player switches off on its own. It is kind of a check so that the driver's attention is not diverted while driving.

From the ones that I have rode on, the tv's are located on the back of the front seat, so the driver won't really be distracted. But still, it's not fun to watch or read while the vehicle is moving.

In my opinion, it is not wise and safe to watch movies when driving but you can have the children watch while driving with them. It is better to listen to audio.

Obviously it's not good for a driver to watch bit fine for the passengers. I can watch them fine. Its reading that bothers me in a car.

The safety feature is way to easy to defeat.

No, I don't think TVs in cars are useful. I think TV use for passengers are okay, but I can get distracted if I am watching TV and driving.

As a single adult, it probably seems useless. You're going to end up in the car alone most of the time so you won't be able to watch the movie. To a parent, though, this is probably invaluable. Being able to distract your child through the duration of a car ride is nothing short of a miracle to most parents. I'd have no use for it, but my mother probably would have killed for it when I was a kid.

I'd never watch movies in the car, unless I had to stay in a parked car for a long time. Then I would (probably). I'd rather read something or listen to music.

I have never thought that watching movies in a car is a good idea, ok, I can understand the cars that have the screens in back of the front seats, so the passengers can watch a movie on a long trip but in opinion the driver must not have any distractions or as little distractions as possible to keep his/her full attention on the road, after all, the lives of all the passengers are in the drivers hands.

If it's a family car, then having one with the movie in would be a great idea. It would make much sense when travelling on long trips. It could definitely keep the children occupied and cause less distraction for the driver.
