Are you getting it custom built to look cool (glowing blue lights and alien eyes) or to be really super fast? Is it still a PC? I used to really love PCs. Then, I'd stick something like Norton on it to protect it from spyware and the whole thing would just get slow and bogged down. I do love all the little programs that you can get for PC. Nevertheless, I'm glad I finally switched to Mac.

    Hi ecigsnet!

It is not going to have any external bells and whistles. Just a hell of a lot of ram and memory because as a writer and video maker I need the high speed. I use Avast and Malwarebytes for security. The are free and continually update! And as usual it will be a PC. I have tried a Mac in the past but prefer Microsoft. About the only thing I will buy is a few lighted keyboards as I do a lot of writing at night and go through about three keyboards a year!

Just caught this thread. I am a long time Mac owner. I think I have owned four computers and they have all been macs and they have all been desktops. Including this one. All but one were also bought used.
The first one was new. This one was about four years old when I got it. I would move up (and maybe to a laptop) if I could afford it but no real need right and I can't afford to really. Yeah a few Mac fans here.

I recently cracked the screen of my little HP netbook rendering it pretty much useless. My desktop is probably 4 years old at minimum and I only use it for saving pictures to my external hard drive. Seems to me like my Samsung Galaxy Tab and my Android smartphone are the primary means for me to access the internet these days. I MIGHT replace my desktop in order to do some advanced video editing later this year.

I recently bought a new laptop after my previous lap top finally died after seven years of use. I prefer lap tops due to the fact I too do some photo and video editing and a laptop is convient in the field when I need to get an edit done on location.

Mac is quite expensive, so the layman's and gamers choice will always be Windows. :D

Well I agree you are not going to get a new Mac desktop or laptop for under $600 (and I am talking Canadian prices and dollars since that is where I am and what I know). But you could score a Mac Mini for what seems to be a fair price. A buddy of mine also a Mac guy got one recently, his fourth or fifth Mac, and he is well pleased with it. If I was looking I would definitely look at a Mini, a fair bit less than the entry level Mac Laptop.
Of course if you want a laptop instead of desktop a Mini would not work for you. But as I said, Macs seem to serve most of us Mac fans well.

My desktop is sputtering along after 5 years. I'm in the market for a new one soon, just not sure exactly what I want to get yet.

I know just how you feel. I just went through replacing my ancient laptop that I have been using for seven years. It actually out lived its time with a lot of nursing and tweeking along the way. I used to work in the the electronics, computer industry and I know my old laptop lived way longer than it was supposed to. The average life span of electronics is usually around three to four years without any problems.

Same here, two laptops. I have a Sony and my son has a Dell. I want to invest in getting my son a Mac though, because I heard they are really good for doing all kinds of art and stuff, but I don't know. I'll have to do a lot of research to find out what's what.

I have a laptop and a desktop, but no tablet yet. I think the only thing I would use it for, would be playing games. I already do that on my laptop, so I'm not going to go for one just yet. Right now, I use my desktop for work, and then I use my PC to play around online, play games, watch movies, etc.

I would not call "computer" to a tablet because it is far from serving as a computer does.

Tablets have great features but until Microsoft launches their tablet with Windows 8, there is not really any compatibility between what you have done for years over you computer, and what you can do now over a tablet.

Perhaps this is different for iPad/Mac owners though.

I'm a desktop PC fanatic and won't be switching to handheld, ever if I can manage it. I like how I can build my own PC with parts I want and I like knowing that I can swap out a hard drive when I want/need to, or even run multiple drives at the same time. Part of my reason for liking the desktop is also because I don't have to worry about various companies monitoring my movements via GPS to know what they can pitch me or sell to me, I find that EXTREMELY annoying.

Can't they do the same thing with a desktop computer only easier because it is stationary?

They can do anything they want but there wouldn't be much point in sneaking in a GPS system on a desktop, I don't think. They usually go for the remote camera activation, remote speaker turned into a listening device(speaker vibrations create a signal when you talk near them) or remote assistance functions. It's almost common for manufacturers to install backdoors now, even the Kindle had one and Amazon used it to delete an ebook from people who bought it a few months ago.

Conspiracy theories aside, if I can't open it up and swap out the parts I don't want it.

I'm with you on that one. It seems that there is no way an individual can really be sure their computer, tablet or cell phone for all that matter to be secure in today's high tech arena. It bad enough a person has no privacy on their cell phone or tablet much less their desktop at home.

I have a laptop and a tablet. I use my laptop the most out of the two. I want to someday get a laptop that can also be a tablet, the best of both worlds.

I'd like that best of both worlds too but they just can't help themselves with the tracking crap, it's part of their business model to gather as much data as they can.

Google is the worst, their ultra low cost pc was stuffed with the stuff by default apparently.

I have a HP Pavilion g6 with a core i5 processor -- I love it! It's got 1TB space, and the YouTube videos don't lag anymore even if I play them in 720 hd!
