Yeah, Rosa. A person in our position might have a hard time trying to picture what must be going on in the mids of those junkies. They must hve lost their mind and no longer care about anything... as long as they get very high all is good in their book.

@Trellum, the other sad thing is that they don't want to accept help but they will continue to weary down friends and family members by stealing from them and letting them look bad. I just think though that it is all because of their sick minds.

I saw the pictures and i thought i was watching a horror movie, i can't imagine looking at my bones and actually touching them, that's demented, if looking at an x-ray of my foot requires guts, how much more of this? As a pharmacy student, I just wanted to chime in on this. I've been studying Krokodil for a while, so I figured I'd clear up some misconceptions.

The actual drug itself, desomorphine, is no more harmful than morphine, codeine, or any other opiate/opioid. If you can get clean desomorphine and clean paraphernalia (needles, pipes, etc., depending on your route of administration), the only thing you will have to deal with is addiction. The problems come from the crude clandestine production which results in severe phosphorus contamination, damaging the injection site.

The most common way of synthesizing desomorphine is by taking codeine (Codeine can be purchased OTC in Russia), adding red phosphorus and iodine (also used in meth production), and heating and cooling the solution at certain points. When you have poor, backyard chemists playing with impure chemicals, dirty lab equipment, and an environment that isn't sterile, you end up with contaminated product.

Krokodil is a direct result of poverty, heroin addiction, and prohibition. If you're a young person in Russia with a heroin addiction and almost no money, what do you do? You attempt to synthesize desomorphine because it's dirt cheap to make and it will help you avoid withdrawal.

There is a lot more money in the US and heroin is fairly cheap. Also, codeine can't be purchased without a prescription. The heroin addicts here have absolutely no use for desomorphine.

The Krokodil scare is just like the "bath salts" scare. Media sources didn't look into the situation very well, so they automatically claimed that the drugs would, without a doubt, kill you, make you eat someone's face off, or lose limbs. If you're able to purchase substituted cathinones (MDPV and a-PVP were the two most common substituted cathinones in bath salts) from a credible chemist with measured doses, you will be fine. If you purchase a packet of bath salts where the dose doesn't have to be measured because it's "not for human consumption," you're going to have a bad time.

Thanks for sharing all that info with us, Rob! It sounds like if done the right way this drug isn't as dangerous as they claim it is, I still wouldn't like to risk it tho. Not sure what to do with this info, but it's nice to know the truth :)

I think drug addiction is really bad, no matter what drug people use... using drugs is just awful and will always push you do things you'd never do in your right mind. I feel so bad for the family of all those drug addicts... many people I knew died because they were into drugs, some died as a direct result of the constant use of drugs and others... well, let's say drugs indirectly caused their deaths. I'm so glad I never got into this.

Yeah, I really hate drugs! They do really destroy lives and should never be used. I'm so glad that I never got into using drugs, I did experiment a bit when I was younger (smoking pot) but I never liked it. My mom always warned me that once I tried something like that things would escalate, that's why I never tried cocaine when I had the chance.

If you're ever in a position where you have to vote for or against prohibition, think back to this post. The terrible effects of impure drugs are a direct result of keeping drugs illegal.

I think it's extremely unfair to say that all drugs will always push you to do things that you'd never do. Surely the drugs that you take, whether it's caffeine, tylenol, allergy medicine, etc., haven't caused you to do terrible things, have they? I've experimented with more drugs than I have fingers and toes and I'm still extremely healthy, working on multiple degrees, and working two jobs. As someone who has actually had experience in the world of drugs, from both a recreational and an educational standpoint, I can say with confidence that drugs aren't always going to make you do things that you wouldn't have done while sober. It all comes down to the responsibility and precautionary measures taken by the drug user.

A poster over here said this cocktail isn't all that bad, but in my eyes anything that contains those ingredients is super dangerous! I'm so glad I'm not a junkie at all! I wish I could say I'd never try something like this, because you never know what you'd be willing to do if you were a junkie, but I truly hope I never hit the bottom like that! I will not try any kind of drugs ever!!!

Smoking cannabis in public isn't legal in Amsterdam. The only place you're allowed to legally smoke is in coffeeshops. Cannabis is still very much illegal in Amsterdam.

As a side note, I've had plenty of friends go there and not one of them said that they smelled anything in the streets. The smell was contained in the coffeeshops. I'd like to eventually visit one day.

Rationality goes out the window when your body is screaming at you to give it the drugs that it needs. Until you've felt the effects of opiate withdrawal, you will never understand just how miserable it is. The drug addicts know that what they're doing is killing them. They fully understand that they're shooting impure drugs into their bodies with dirty needles. They want to stop, but every time they try they're met with terrible withdrawal symptoms. The pain becomes so unbearable that they'd rather shoot up again to get rid of the symptoms than go through withdrawal for another week.

Cocaine is a topical anesthetic, so it just numbs your nose. All it does is feel a little uncomfortable before it goes numb. The main reason why some cocaine burns more than other is because the cocaine has residual acid inside. When cocaine is processed, hydrochloric acid is used to turn the freebase into cocaine HCl. Afterwards, it is washed, usually with acetone, to remove the acid. This step is usually rushed and there will most likely be some acid left over in the cocaine. Adulterants can also cause pain.

Wow I'm learning a lot from you Rob! But of course as a layman, I had to re-read your posts to absorb what you're saying. So it probably feels like a slight burning pain when you snort it then.

In a nutshell, pure cocaine shouldn't be anything more than uncomfortable. Snorting impure cocaine, however, can hurt because, just like with Krokodil, clandestine chemists don't always purify their drugs the way that they should. Impure drugs take less time to make and often weigh more, resulting in more money for less drugs.

Rob, I was obviously talking about hard drugs... I don't consider the medication I take a drug, since I'm not addicted to it, neither caffeine... I like coffee, but drink it twice a week maximum. I was obviously talking about drugs like heroine and cocaine that will make you forget about basic safety concerns, like those junkies who don't think it twice before reusing needles. By the way, I have seen what some drugs do to people, my cousin had a horrible death because she did things she'd not have done if it wasn't because she was really into drugs. You can consider yourself lucky... where I live I have seen plenty of people not making it.

I know that you meant hard drugs. I just wanted to point the common misconception that drugs are inherently bad. The definition of a drug isn't "anything that will kill you or cause you to become addicted." By definition, a drug is anything that, when consumed, causes biological effects. These effects can range anywhere from medicinal to causing hallucinations. So many people get that wrong, so I wanted to clear it up.

The heroin addicts that I know absolutely think twice about reusing needles. They know that it's bad for them, but they either 1) don't have the money for new syringes, or 2) don't live in a state where the sale of non-prescription syringes is legal.

As far as my safety, I don't consider myself lucky as luck had absolutely nothing to do with it. I do my research, I test my substances with Marquis reagent tests, I use lab-grade scales to measure out doses, and I test the substances in controlled environments with other responsible people with me. If you know what you're doing and have self-control, you're not going to let drugs get a hold of you.

I know what you meant, I'm not one of those persons you talked about. I've my own share of experience with both legal an illegal drugs... given the environment I grew in. No new to this at all or the definition of drugs, I had an education as well.

Well, the heroin addicts you know might think it twice, but I bet they have reused needles several times already, no difference at all. To me it's completely irrelevant whether someone think it twice before reusing needles... if they use them the damage is done and in the end doesn't matter how much thought they put into it.

I knew a lot heroin addicts in my life... some thought twice, but didn't make a difference... some didn't care anymore. There was a woman I used to see often where I lived... you could see puncture marks all over her body, at least the visible parts. I doubt she is still alive... By the time I met her she had sunken so deeply already. No, I will never see drugs with good eyes.

With that in mind, you might be able to test your stuff, that's an advantage over all the others who can't, so obviously you can't compare your case to theirs. Congrats for not becoming an addict, I hope you are more the exception than the rule.

By the way, not interested to start a debate with you or anything, I just wanted to talk about my experiences with drugs. NOTHING personal at all. You obviously have had different experiences to mine, that doesn't change anything. You will NEVER change the way I think about drugs and those who use them, so no point in a debate.
