Does anyone out there remember the "Hudson Hornet"? I was the proud owner of a 1949 red Hudson hornet with the stick on the column and a straight eight engine. Of all the cars I owned it actually was one of my best. I virtually drove it until it just would not go no more but what a car for its time.

Don't know if I have seen one in person but I do remember the car.

Remember the attachable "swamp coolers" you could put on the passenger window?

Wow. I am not exactly a young guy. And no I don't actually remember it.
    But I remember my father's 1950-something Dodge (1954 or 56 maybe?) .
    Not the Hudson.
    Pretty interesting.

I've never heard of that particular car model, but now I know how it looks like. They really have this 1940's look that is common in most vintage cars.

Those were the days of chrome and real metal. You could have a minor fender bender with no fenders bending!

You can say that again! If I had my Hudson nowadays and got into a fender bender with one of these "new fangled" motor vehicles, the "newby" would probably be totaled by my Hudson let's say at a speed of fifteen to twenty miles per hour. They just don't make them like they used to. (smile)

Didn't they model one of the cars in the Pixar movie "Cars" after the Hudson Hornet?

Can't say that I have ever heard of this particular car, ever. But, like my mother says, "First time for everything."
From looking at the pictures that are posted here on this thread, it looks like it was a pretty big car. How did it look in red? Did you pick the color red on purpose, or was that the only color they had? By that I mean, did you buy it from one person selling a car, so that was the only color they had? I have always been kind of nervous to buy a red car. So flashy:woot: .

    What's a straight eight engine?? I really don't know.
I know that I could Google it, but I'll let you tell me instead, if you don't mind:).
What does stick on the column mean? Does that mean on the floor? I know I could Google that too, but again, I'll let you tell me.

A "straight eight engine is one that has the cylinders in a STRAIGHT line one behind the other as opposed to a V-8 that has the cylinders in a "V" configuration.

Oh, okay. And what about the stick on the column? And the red car? I'm sorry, am I asking too many questions?? If I am, it is your fault for posting stuff that I don't know about:hilarious::hilarious:... lol, notice how I blame you:playful:.

I could totally ask you a few more questions about the straight eight engine, but I'll hold back... for now:roflmao::roflmao:

Built like a bullet, strong as a tank and as powerful as your mother in law! This is the car that could drive a family to church while looking like a good wholesome family car and then peel out of the parking lot and scream down the street like a race car. They don't build them like this anymore!

It may be funny but it is sooooooo true! I had one and it was one of the best cars I ever owned. Granted by today's standards it was a tank but one felt safe driving it compared to the autos of today. If the opportunity came along to get another one I would not hesitate!:)

I like the part about it being as powerful as your mother-in-law... not MORE powerful, AS powerful. Too funny! You people here at Gearhead Central!:hilarious::hilarious::woot:

I would be so happy to hear that the opportunity came along for you to get another one! You really are an advocate for this car. Maybe the opportunity will come along, you never know! It could happen soon!
I can totally appreciate what you are saying about feeling safe in a car when you drive it:thumbsup: . A "tank" can be a very good thing out on the road. Whatever happened to this car of yours? Did you already mention what happened to it? I have to go back and read:oops:.

I always heard it as 3 on the tree. Its a standard transmission but rather then having a stick coming out of the floor, you had arm on the steering column. I haven't drove one myself.

Here is a video showing it in action.

Thanks for the info:). I've never seen this type of thing before. Just watching him drive the car, with that arm on the steering column, was making my eyes and throat hurt. Just seems so complicated and forced, ugh! I feel like I need to scream.

At least he was having fun driving in the snow. Having fun kind of takes some of the trauma away.
