What camera do you use? What would you recommend?

Right now I still have a Sony DSC-P100 which I had for 6 or 7 years. The camera is still going strong but its time to start looking for its replacement.

The problem is I'm not 100% sure what I want. Some of what I know are...
    • I know I want a more optical zoom, 3X isn't cutting it.
    • It is a 5.1 mp camera so anything will be higher then that so that isn't an issue.
    • HD video would be nice.
    • At times I take pictures of fast moving objects so it would be nice if it handles that well.
    • Being able to take good night shots would be nice. Downtown waterfront shots at night, fireworks, shots in the club and so on.
I would also like to have a DSLR or one of the micro ones with interchangeable lenses but I know I need to have something that I can carry with me on the go.

While we are at it, if your looking to get a little more serious and take a higher quality picture are the new micro cameras with the interchangeable lenses worth it or should you go with a regular DSLR? What are the differences?

What features or specs matter the most?

I use a regular Kodak digital camera. There's not much that I care to use a camera for, so I don't need anything too expensive. I know a lot of people that have spent $1,000+ on cameras, and I just couldn't do it.

I have a Samsung 12.1 megapixel camera which i have had for about 2 years but i just don't use it anymore, i usually use my camera on my Samsung nexus s the reason for this it is easier to upload to the computer and don't have to carry around another device its all in one.

I want to get one of the new GoPro Hero 2 cameras. They increased it to 11 megapixels and added new features. From the pictures I've seen, it looks amazing, and the price is really good.

I own a dinosaur of a camera that shoots stills and video. It is an old "Sony" TRV 525 which I have had for about ten years now and it still takes great photos and does video. I have to admit it is a bit obsolete by today's standards.

I haven't used a camera in a long time since I started using an Iphone. The IPhone5 has pretty amazing picture and sound quality and covers me for all my needs....it wont be doing any heavy duty filming but it is amazing for a phone camera. Hopefully I can get some good suggestions for a real camera in this thread.

Its nice having a nice camera on a phone. Mine is ok on my BlackBerry Torch. I'm excited for the one that comes on the BlackBerry 10 phone. But at the end of the day it is still nice to have a stand alone camera as well.

Having worked professionally as a videographer/photographer I prefer a "normal" camera to the ones I have seen and use on cell phones. I guess I'm a bit old fashion that way. I did however purchase a little digital camera that takes still and video shots. I have to admit a friend had bought the same camera before me and took some photos and did a video clip with it. To my surprise the resolution was "OUTSTANDING" for the size of the camera both in video and still modes. I have used professional studio cameras both still and video that had nowhere near the resolution this little camera does. I won't name it here because I don't want to get into any trouble but if I may the first letter of it is a "C" and the last letter is "N". You can research it from there.

How long did you do that for? As far as brand names go, I have no problem at all with company names being mentioned on this forum. If it is someone plugging their oun website I would like thenm to contact me first.

    What model did you buy?

I suggest a bridge camera, which is a fusion between a point-and-shoot and an SLR camera.. It provides you with considerable professional looking result, with less knowledge needed.. a Canon Powershot is a great example..

    Hi James!

Last month I bought a Cannon Powershot A810. 5x optical zoom, 16.0 mega pixels and it is great! Al was so impressed with it that the other day he got one too! Fits in my pocket so it is always handy. Price was about US$65.

Here is a video I made for a different site a week ago

and two pics I just took a few minutes ago. One is regular and the other is zoomed.

For my needs it is a great product for the bucks!

I heard that if you really want top notch pics, then you should buy a DSLR. I'm not really a photography enthusiast, so I don't own a digital camera.
